Brotzman’s Nursery were already producing a number of magnolia selections when in 2019, Jose Velazquez, the propagator for Klehm’s Song Sparrow Nursery in Avalon, WI, called to ask if we wanted to tap into the extensive inventory of cultivars they had been growing. Knowing of Roy Klehm’s reputation as a great plantsman, and his friendship with noted magnolia breeders Phil Savage and Dennis Ledvina, we jumped at the chance to get nearly 70 cultivars that were new to us. Since that time, we have continued to propagate these and other Ledvina hybrids, as well as old and new releases from other notable breeders.
We now have stock from more than 150 cultivars, representing the work of Dennis Ledvina, Phil Savage, David G. Leach, Joe McDaniel, Randal Kobetich, Ron Rabideau, Curt Hansen, and others.
Some of these are propagated by cuttings and will be marked as being “own root” (OR). Several of the species listed have been grown from seed. Although a mix of understock might be used, the majority of our budded/grafted plants are on Magnolia kobus. The large leaf hybrids, like ‘Wiesneri’ and ‘Aashilde Kalleberg,’ will usually have been done on Magnolia tripetala, Magnolia officinalis, or Magnolia hypoleuca. Plants grown from cuttings are sold in #1 containers when they reach 3 years of age. The 1-year budded plants are sold bare root in bundles of 3 or 5. Afterwards, both bare root and budded go through multiple shifts into larger containers before going into the field.
Our plan is to use this site to illustrate each of these selections with photos and descriptive plant characteristics. With so many of these new to us, we ask your patience while we record our personal observations, as well as inputs from magnolia aficionados around the country.
